CAIRNS BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU CLASSES

Looking to learn Jiu Jitsu?

What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, often referred to as BJJ, is a martial art and combat sport that primarily focuses on ground fighting and submission holds. It originated from Kodokan Judo, which was introduced to Brazil by Mitsuyo Maeda, a judoka and one of Judo's early pioneers. Carlos Gracie, one of Maeda's students, further developed and refined the techniques, eventually passing down the knowledge to his family, who continued to promote and innovate Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Unlike other martial arts, BJJ emphasizes technique, leverage, and timing over raw strength and size. Practitioners learn how to defend themselves against larger opponents by using efficient grappling techniques, joint locks, and chokeholds. Through continuous practice, students develop physical fitness, mental discipline, and problem-solving skills.

What type of Jiu Jitsu do you offer?

We are proud to offer both styles of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu; Gi and No - Gi.

What is the difference between Gi and No-Gi?

In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the difference between gi and no-gi classes lies in the attire, techniques, and gripping styles. Gi classes involve training with a traditional uniform, allowing for intricate grip-based techniques and strategic thinking. No-gi classes, on the other hand, focus on training without the gi, emphasising speed, fluidity, and adapting techniques for real-life scenarios. Read our in-depth blog post about it here.

Can I start at any date?

Yes. You can start our BJJ classes at any point.

What do I wear to No-Gi classes?

Shorts/tights and a rash guard is perfect! If you don't yet have a rash guard a tight fitted t-shirt is fine. BJJ is done bare foot.

What do I wear to Gi classes?

A Gi! sometimes called a kimono. For trials it is not always necessary but after after you sign up, you will be required to purchase your own. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gi's are available to purchase in the gym or via onnline retailers.

What else do I need to bring?

We recommend you bring a towel and drink of water.

Can anyone train Jiu Jitsu?

Of course! BJJ is for everyone due to its emphasis on technique, leverage and timing instead of raw strength and size.

Do you offer kids Jiu Jitsu classes?

Yes! Every Tuesday and Thursday at 5pm-5:45pm for children age 8 - 15 years.

How is BJJ graded?

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is graded on a belt system. Everyone starts a white. After that there are blue, purple, brown and black belts. It's estimated to take the average practitioner around 10 years to earn their black belt, however there are more and more people achieving black belt much quicker than that.

Who teaches the classes?

Our coach is called Alec. He is a brown belt and has been training Jiu Jitsu since he was a child. Fun fact! Alec is the only Cairns BJJ coach who is from Brazil 🇧🇷
