His recent victory at the prestigious North Queensland Games showcases his exceptional talent and commitment to the sport. Join us as we delve into Elisha's journey, his experiences as both a coach and a competitor, and his insights into the world of boxing.
Can you tell us about your background in boxing - when do you first start boxing?
My Dad has always pushed my siblings and I to do boxing since I can remember but it wasn’t until I was about 21 that I started taking the sport of boxing seriously. I now train out of Pretty Top Team under Paul Hosking and Michael Yelland as an amateur boxer looking to make a name for myself in the boxing scene.
What inspired you to become a coach?
I was encouraged, by my coach and other coaches of the gym, that coaching others would help with my understanding and make me a better fighter.
At Pretty Top Team you teach a beginners boxing class. What advice would you give to a new member who wants to get into boxing?
Whether you are training to get fit or training to fight, always train to learn.
How do you assess a new boxer's strengths and weaknesses when they first come to you?
I have them do a feet, hand and punch fundamentals drill which usually tells me enough about a boxer.
How do you tailor your coaching techniques to suit boxers of different skill levels and experience?
The better they are the less adjustment they need and then getting in good consistent reps should be the goal for each session.
In your personal experience as an accomplished boxing what are some of your greatest achievements?
My most recent fight in early May of 2024, at the North Queensland Games, taking home the gold in the 80kg division.
Can you share a challenging situation you've faced as a coach and how you handled it?
Management with people who want advanced coaching when they may not yet understand the systems of the gym. I’ve learned to put people through a fundamental level before advancing them regardless of their level in order to have a strong base level and understanding. throughout the whole gym. Otherwise fundamentally sound boxers may be limited to the pace of the wrong boxer.
What do you think makes Pretty Top Team a special place to train?
The community is outstanding and the coaching methods are second to none. Everyone enjoys a good sweat and learning something new.
Outside out the gym how do you think boxing improves your life?
It brings an edge to my physical, mental and social health, developing my body to its highest potential, building my mind to be a mental fortress and growing my social surroundings with supportive individuals.
What quality do you think every amateur boxer should have if they wish to succeed?
Discipline.
Lastly, what are your personal goals for the future as a coach and as a boxer in your own right?
I’d like to become a full time world class boxer who can also coach.
